Piedra de la Rosa – Stone Rose

PiedradelaRosa

This is one of unusual sights here in Tenerife of a rock face that is shaped like the petals of a rose. It can be found in the upper Orotava valley on the La Orotava road to Teide National Park, just beyond Aguamansa.
The “rose” is the columnar jointing of a basaltic lava flow and was formed as a lava flow cooled and crystallized into a coherent rock. As it began to contract the shrinkage of the rock mass resulted in the development of numerous cracks, called joints.
This lava flow originated from a monogenetic volcano at the head of the Orotava valley, the Montaña de Enmedio, dated as 30,000 years old.
